"The best “ERA” ever to become a small/mid size business owner." Many factors contribute to a right time, right location and the right business philosophy. Recent surveys of Small and Mid size markets reflect business license/permits increased in 2006 over 2005 significantly. The trend currently is in independently owned businesses. Be it privately owned or Franchised, studies reflect that almost 78% of adults over the age of 25 have the desire to be their own boss. Unfortunately most have entered into that disguised comfort zone of being an employee. When this happens that comfort zone becomes addicting and intrusive to our creative side and more importantly we feel our efforts although most important are being used by others. And “They Are”. Appreciation is the trophy of all employees. Studies reflect in excess of 80% of workers feel under appreciated by their employers. Compared to that of the self-employed, (invert the %’s) it stands to reason that if appreciation is key to happiness, we have many miserable employees in this country. Witnessed daily by all of us!
Even though the percentages of us that desire to own their own business is high, we also know the percent of those that will ACT on their wants is less than 10%. Considering the immigrants that have come to America through all these years do not possess the mental block about starting their own business. They realize that the American dream is alive & well quicker that those of us born here. They muddle through the tasks and allow for the efforts of realizing a dream because they see the opportunity is there. They seize that opportunity and do not subscribe to the theory that we have inherited. The theory of a good education, work hard in the best career as possible, pay the taxes and retire with government security programs and hope for the best! Well, those are admirable and the seemingly safe way. Economic pitfalls await the employed person for much of his/her control is lost to that of the employer and other influences. Austerity, Corporate greed, layoffs, Major benefit program cutbacks by corporate America and numerous others takes its toll daily on the best educated and titled position in the workforce. Notwithstanding, Social Security is questionable at best as to IF it will be around much longer.
POINTS To PONDER:
It is believed that at age 50. Close to 70% of population has less than $5000 in the bank, less than $75,000 of home equity (those that own) and 95% cannot afford to retire.
At age 65
45% depend on relatives, 30% depend on charities, 23% are still working, and 2% are self-sustaining! (Longitude studies approximate)
IF this is what we look forward to, then our golden years will be more tarnished than we know! “It need not be that way”

The national savings rate dropped to a negative for the first time in almost 80 years. And just 25 years ago Americans saved an average of 10% of their earnings. In 2005 they spent $42 BILLION more than they earned!
